In 1947, José Saramago published his first book. He presented the manuscript of *A Viúva* (The Widow) to the publisher; however, one of the conditions imposed for the novel's publication was that the title be changed to *Terra do Pecado* (Land of Sin). It has remained so to this day, without the author ever having accepted the change.

To mark the centenary of the birth of the only Portuguese-language Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, Porto Editora is restoring the original title chosen by the author for his first novel – A Viúva (The Widow) – and entrusting the cover calligraphy to Violante Saramago Matos, his only daughter, born in the same year that José Saramago became a published author.

A youthful novel and the first step in an admirable literary life, The Widow tells the story of Maria Leonor, a young and wealthy woman in the Ribatejo region, who must not only grieve for her husband's death but also bear the guilt of a relationship that defies a time when appearances matter too much and every action has a price.

Following her husband's death, Maria Leonor, mother of her husband, is so difficult to manage her family's income in Alentejo and her greatest control over her environment. During the month of deep depression, he decides to face his own landowner, but his future continues to be the torment of an inestinguishable desire.
Through the depths of love's essence, the passage of time and the stupefied mutations of nature, the giovane vedova passes through the sleepless night, spying on the love of his camera and suffering from thin solitude when due to many different things I burst into his life and his fate is inexpertly unremarkable arrest a mushy nuova.

Oggi, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth, quest'opera, written ad appena ventiquattro anni, viene pubblicata per la prima volta in Italian with the original title.
