In 1957, Publicações Europa-América published the third volume. The Defeat of the trilogy 08-15 by Hans Hellmut Kirst. The three titles were translated from French, with the author's permission, by José Saramago. The book belongs to the 20th Century Collection and the cover is by Otelo Azinhais.
In The Defeat, however, there are no "grand descriptions of battles. It is more about the collapse on a moral level than on a military level, although the latter is felt in the disorientation of the 'every man for himself' mentality in a rout," as noted by those responsible for the Portuguese edition.
The copy held in the José Saramago Foundation Library in Lisbon was donated by the PT Foundation in June 2015.
