«"The wisest man I ever knew couldn't read or write."»
Thus began José Saramago's speech before the Swedish Academy, on the occasion of being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1998, referring to his grandfather, Jerónimo Melrinho. And it is precisely this grandfather who, wandering the streets of Lisbon with Ricardo Reis, the heteronym of Fernando Pessoa who is also a Saramago character, guides the reader through Saramago's life and work, from his childhood in Azinhaga do Ribatejo to his last days on the island of Lanzarote.
A magnificent tribute to Portuguese literature, this graphic novel, now being reissued by Porto Editora, is authored by Tomás Guerrero, a comic book author and illustrator based in Galicia.
