José Saramago recounts and retells the history of the Iberian peoples through the memory of a narrator, multiple to himself and to the characters whose wanderings he accompanies. The myths are woven into the stones of the fracture that formed the raft. In them are recovered the chronicles, pilgrimages of anonymous or notorious heroes of Iberian identity, all notable, Don Quixote among them, the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela in the Middle Ages among others.
