Additional information

José Saramago drew from his childhood past to find the material for this autobiographical literary narrative. The writer evokes his maternal grandparents, Jerónimo and Josefa, speaks to us of their way of being and existing, and presents us with human life in its splendor of communion with what is simplest, most natural and, ultimately, most profound: childhood freedom, the sharing of values, the connection to the elements of nature, love, and death.
