Additional information

«One day I understood – it was a sudden thing that I barely remember – that I could only write the book [Raised from the Ground] if I told it, that is, by transforming myself into a multiplied narrator, from outside and inside, near and distant, serious and ironic, tender and brutal, naive and experienced, a narrator who, in telling reality, and in order to tell it, was capable of inventing it at every moment. I realized that this could only be done if I reconstructed orality in writing, if I made writing discourse in the proper sense, but mercilessly rejecting any temptation of phonetic transcription, which is the worst of traps. I sacrificed without any remorse the picturesque, the local color, the folklore. With all this, I didn't have to push any door; it opened for me when I approached it by the right path. From then on, it was easy.»
