Additional information

This edition is intended to mark the fifty years of activity of Editorial Caminho, founded in December 1975. The choice of this way to mark this anniversary is justified for two reasons: José Saramago, who remains the only Portuguese-language writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, was published by Caminho for over thirty years, even after his death in 2010; on the other hand, it was precisely with this play that José Saramago joined Caminho in 1979, and joined to stay, leaving an indelible mark on the publishing house.

It was in early June 1979 that, on the stage and in the hall of the Academia Almadense, where the Grupo de Campolide (now the Companhia de Teatro de Almada) was then based, the words written by José Saramago in his first play took on a physical form. His debut as a playwright was one of the most moving moments in the life of the company directed by Joaquim Benite. *A Noite* (The Night) was written by José Saramago at the invitation of Luzia Maria Martins, who directed the Teatro Estúdio de Lisboa. The director and playwright (mistreated in life, and unjustly forgotten today) challenged the author to write a play on the fifth anniversary of the 25th of April Revolution. José Saramago accepted the challenge and created *A Noite*. However, without state funding, Luzia Maria Martins could not produce and stage the play, and the writer entrusted it to Joaquim Benite and the Grupo de Campolide, whose performances he attended and admired.
