Additional information
«What interested me in the story of this elephant was its end, when after it died its legs were cut off to serve as a coat rack at the entrance of the palace, where canes, hats, and parasols were placed. I often say, “Don’t read my books, read my epigraphs.” The one for this book [The Elephant’s Journey] is like this: “We always arrive at the place where we are expected.” Obviously, it has to do with death, but also with what happens afterward. And this comical use of the elephant’s front legs impressed me. If it weren’t for that ending, perhaps I wouldn’t have written the book.»
