The Year of Death of Ricardo Reis

The Year of Death of Ricardo Reis
1984

It's a book about loneliness, sad, about a sad city, about a sad time.
In 1936, I was 14 years old, but I remember the sadness that was that city and, without exaggerating the comparisons, perhaps today's readers, in today's city, will be able to find some other manifestations of sadness and loneliness.

«"A multifaceted time. Labyrinthine. The stories of human societies. Ricardo Reis arrives in Lisbon at the end of December 1935. He stays until September 1936. A character from another fiction, that of Fernando Pessoa's heteronyms. And an inverse movement, right from the start: 'Here where the sea ends and the land begins'; turning Camões' verse upside down: 'Where the land ends and the sea begins'. In Camões, the movement is from land to sea; in Saramago's book, we have Ricardo Reis returning to Portugal by sea. The epic movement of departure is replaced. Once again, history in Saramago's writing. And the relationships between life and death. Ricardo Reis arrives in Lisbon at the end of December and Fernando Pessoa died on November 30th. Ricardo Reis visits him in the cemetery. A complex time. Fascism consolidates itself in Portugal."“

«The wise man is the one who is content with the spectacle of the world.» Ricardo ReisIn The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis, Saramago enters into a play with Fernando Pessoa, becoming both protagonists of one of the most moving narratives in the literature of the end of the century. accompanied by the comforting shadow of Pessoa, both immortal singers from the city of Tajo, the city of Eça de Queiróz and Camões. A novel that opens up to the reader multiple possibilities of interpretation and that gives the prose a charm that merges with the mystery of the creative word, a work that pleases, as honors, Fernando Pessoa, Ricardo Reis, Álvaro de Campos and Alberto Caeiro equally.

In this magnificent novel, the most classic heteronym of the great Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, the Horatian Ricardo Reis, finds himself back in Lisbon after a period in Brazil, where he had self-exiled himself. The year is 1936. A doctor, educated by Jesuits and monarchists, he is a wise man capable of being content to observe the spectacle of the world, as he says in one of the book's epigraphs. Here, however, he finds himself confronted with the events of 1936, in Portugal and abroad; on one side, Salazar's fascist dictatorship; on the other, the gestation of the Second World War, the French Popular Front, the Spanish Civil War, the Nazi expansion in Europe. A confrontation, in short, with a world that was certainly not a spectacle.

»Knjiga izjemne vrednosti.«

(Wall Street Journal).

»Nisem se rodil za vso to slavo.«

-(Jose Saramago ob podelitvi Nobelove nagrade).

»Saramago je najbolj nadarjen pisotelj današnjega sveta.«

-(Harold Bloom).

»Najboljši portugalski pistatelj svoje generacije.«

(The Guardian).

Fernando Pessoa will attribute seven works to several imaginary writers, heteronyms. Ricardo Reis is one of heterogeneous quests: a group of professors, poets, epicuris, classicists and monarchists who are going into exile in Brazil when they are going to establish the Republic in Portugal. Saramago narrates, in this work, the story of Ricardo Reis when he returns to Portugal, after the death of Fernando Pessoa. The writer's life and his heterogeneity are intertwined in a profound and passionate reflection on the truth and unity of the individual; a reflection projected on the nostàlgic scene of Lisbon.

This collection, available exclusively in e-book form, brings together the twelve novels (and one novella) of the great Portuguese writer José Saramago, with an introductory essay by Ursula Le Guin. From Saramago's early work, like the enchanting Baltasar & Blimunda and the controversial Gospel According to Jesus Christ, through his masterpiece Blindness and its sequel Seeing, to his later fables of politics, chance, history, and love, like All the Names and Death with Interruptions, this volume showcases the range and depth of Saramago's career, his inimitable narrative voice, and his vast reserves of invention, humor, and understanding.

Kansallisrunoilija Fernando Pessoakin on kuollut.Uudenvuodenyönä Reis – joka todellisuudessa on yksi Pessoan alter egoista – löytää kuolleen runoilijan istumasta hotellihuoneensa sohvalla. Syntyy keskusteluyhteys, jossa maailman less ja ihmisyyden tuska setvitään pohjia myöten. Personan moninaisuudella leikittely huipentuu Reisin sotkeutuessa kahteen Pessoan runoissa esiintyvään naiseen: hotellisiivooja Lídia avaa hänelle auliisti sylinsä, mutta mielitietty Marcendaa ei kiinnosta muu kuin halvaantuneen käden parantaminen.Monitasoisen tarinan kieputuksessa Ricardo Reisin ei lopulta auta kuin myöntää, että maailmassa vain yksi asia on varmaa: kuoltuaan ihminen näkee elämän eri tavalla.”Yksi 1980-luvun mestariteoksista – parhaita lukemiani romaaneja.” – Philadelphia Inquirer”Lumoava, vaikuttava ja liikuttava romaani – – Lissabon vuonna 1936 piirtyy esiin yhtä elävänä kuin Flaubert'n Pariisi vuonna 1848 tai Joycen Dublin vuonna 1904.” – Wall Street Journal”Ricardo Reisin viimeinen vuosi kuuluu viime vuosikymmenien suuriin kaunokirjallisiin hahmotuksiin. Fernando Pessoa is dead. In Lisbon, Ricardo Reis had his own idea in the world: he found a veritable identity. In 1922, José Saramago was a journalist and a Portuguese writer who didn't translate it everywhere. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988.

Bár verseiben egykor az éteri, testetlen szerelmet énekelte meg, most mégis egy szállodai szobalánnyal éli meg a megvalósult nyers Vágy hatalmát, miközben hevesen udvarol egy coimbra-i közjegyző leányának is. S teszi mindezt egykori megalkotójának kritikus tekintetétől és epés megjegyzéseitől kísérve, mivel Pessoa a sors különös kegyéből halála után még kilenc hónapig ebben a világban maradhat, hogy azután a regény végén Reis-zsel együtttávozzon a halhatatlanságba.

A hús-vér emberként megjelenő, képzeletbeli költőtárs, Ricardo Reis és a halála után még szellemként kísértő portugal költő, Fernando Pessoa találkozásának abszurd ötletéből bontja ki José Saramago az 1930-as évek közepének Portugáliájában Játszódó történelmi regényét, amelyet Salazar országlása egyre inkább egy sajátos diktatúra partjaira sodor. From Saramago to mindent elárasztó, nyomasztó politikai propaganda mellett felvillantja az iber félszigeti ország hol nyomorúságos, hol derűs világát is: a korabeli hirdetések, újságcikkek, mozi- és színházműsor, valamint a rádióadások megidézése varázslatos hangulatot tertve teszi letehetetlen olvasmánnyá ezt a regényt.

A Nobel-díjas portugal író a Ricardo Reis halálának éve című regényéért 1984-ben megkapta a Portugál PEN Club kitüntetését és a Casa de Mateus Alapítvány Dom Dinis-díját, 1987-ben az olasz Grinzane Cavour-díjat, 1993-ban pedig az angol The Independent irodalmi elismerését. Írói munkásságáért 1995-ben elnyerte a legmagasabb portugal irodalmi kitüntetést, a Camoes-díjat.

The story of José Saramago in Italy begins in 1984-1985, when Feltrinelli gives his allegiance Memorial of the Convent and The year of the death of Ricardo Reis. In Portogallo and in the world, his operation is always riscuotono always più attenzione, ma dopo i primi titoli saranno altri editori ad affiancarlo in Italia. In 2009, when Saramago's long-lasting position faced him, he confronted Berlusconi at the door and abandoned Einaudi, his editor of the time, and affidare all his work with Feltrinelli, which all of the time refused to give new credit to his literary production.

Nella rosa dei suoi romanzi, The year of the death of Ricardo Reis si presenta eat a gioco di specchi e sdoppiamenti. Siamo in 1936 and Ricardo Reis, etheronym of the poet Fernando Pessoa, returns in Portogallo dopo anni di esilio in Brasile. Who found the ghost of his creator, dead last year. In this dialogue between images, Saramago combines one of the most important poets of Portogallo and a distant distance – or coincidence? – tra verità e finzione. And, traversing the fantasies of the lyrics, he explores what preceded the Second World War and the Scop of the Spanish War, creating a lyrical resonant and deeply affecting the state of European knowledge. A thoughtful novel that brings imagination and the possibility with which Saramago proves his extraordinary expressive power.

Deep inside the body, the tenebra is deep, and all the time the blood comes to the bottom, the brain is cold and può sees, it's dark and feels, there's no mani and afferra, it's chiaro, it's the labyrinth of sesso.

But, come sottolineato Luciana Stegagno Picchio in the occasion of her first Italian edition (1985), the real protagonist of this book is not Reis, but in the year of her death, which in 1936 sees the true story of the writer Salazar allearsi and ideally marciare in the wake of her dark, dark and azzurre di fascisti, nazisti e falangisti, he watches helplessly all'Anschluss, all the war of Etiopia, all the war civil and spagnola. Najbardziej portugalska i jednocześnie zaskakująco uniwersalna powieść José Saramago ważniejszych w jego dorobku.Rok 1936. Lizbona.

Le Monde“Tri neponovljiva i neodoljiva lika – dve žene i jedan duh mrtvog pesnika – upliću se u novi život Rikarda Reiša i čine okosnicu radnje ovog fascinantnog Roman.„ The New York Times

Krallık yanlısı Ricardo Reis'in bıraktığından çok farklıdır Portekiz; burada karşılaştığı insanlar, ölü Pessoa'yla sohbetleri, onda soru işaretleri uyandırır; politik düşünceleri ve insanlar hakkındaki yargıları giderek sarsılır: Kendi varlığı, dünyaya dair bütün bilinenlerin, her an yeni baştan tanımlanabileceğinin kanıtıdır zaten.
