José Saramago wrote forty-three chronicles, "From This World and the Other," for the Jornal do Fundão newspaper between 1971 and 1972. He was in his mid-fifties, the time period covered by the texts now included in this volume. At that time, the writer became a friend of the newspaper and its readers, and that friendship is renewed here, in this commemoration of literature, ultimately the greater meaning of its name.
