Additional information
Between October 1979 and July 1980, José Saramago traveled the country extensively at the invitation of the Círculo de Leitores (Readers' Circle), which was celebrating the tenth anniversary of its establishment in Portugal. After this journey, a mixture of chronicle, narrative, and recollections, the author said that "the end of one journey is only the beginning of another. It is necessary to see what has not been seen, to see again what has already been seen, to see in spring what was seen in summer, to see by day what was seen by night… It is necessary to return to the steps that have been taken, to repeat them, and to trace new paths." This is a decisive book for José Saramago, insofar as it constituted a milestone that offered the author the material conditions to dedicate himself to writing full-time. This special edition of Travel to Portugal It includes all the photographs Saramago took during his trip — almost all of them previously unpublished — along with photographs by Duarte Belo, and its publication coincides with the beginning of the celebrations for José Saramago's centenary.
